The Wall Street Guide to Wines
Regular $25.00.....Now $17.50.....Save $7.50
You know enough about wine not to require a primer on the subject, but still want "tell-me-more" advice. Or you know your wine, but want to explore the taste and wine-buying expertise of wine authorities you can trust. In either case, The Wall Street Journal Guide to Wine is for you. Written by Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher, creators of the paper's highly popular "Tastings" column, the book provides an engagingly personal investigation of wine buying, drinking, and enjoying that's immediately useful--and a pleasure to read.
Not meant to be comprehensive, the book instead offers an introduction to 30 major wine types, such as Chardonnay, Bordeaux, Champagne, and Sauternes, among others. The authors then provide notes on favored bottles in each category with a rating--from Yech to the rare Delicious!--with bottles grouped by price. (Three hundred true wine values are noted.) Readers can thus intelligently choose a good pinot noir costing under $30, for example, or a blow-out Sauternes (a style the authors adore) worth its price. In addition, Gaiter and Brecher offer information on wine shopping and etiquette as well as practical tips, such as "How to Open Champagne Without Killing Anybody" or "How to Judge a Wine Store Without Saying a Word." A list of wine books for further self-education rounds out this sound and inviting book. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Only hours after Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher's column appears
each week in The Wall Street Journal, wine retailers from coast to
coast are sold out of the couple's recommendations. Why? With a friendly
style that is neither intimidating nor condescending, Dorothy and John provide
straight talk for consumers who don't want to be taken for a ride, but do
want to get maximum enjoyment from the abundance of good wines available
today.
If you're like most people, when it comes to buying wine, you're lost. You
walk into a wine shop and you're overwhelmed by the thousands of bottles
staring back at you. So you probably pick up the same, safe Chardonnay or
Merlot, afraid to take a chance on something different.
Dorothy and John know how you feel. They write their hugely popular "Tastings"
column in the "Weekend Journal" for a frustrated majority: people who can
afford more and better wine, who want to know more about wine, but who don't
know where to begin.
In The Wall Street Journal Guide to Wine, they share everything you
need to know about buying, drinking, and enjoying wine, along with listings
of 300 great wine values to get you started. They encourage you to start
at the beginning: Buy two bottles of similar wines, put them in numbered
brown-paper bags, and taste them. You will like one better than the other.
And that is how your wine education begins.
The Wall Street Journal Guide to Wine features thirty different kinds
of wine in all price ranges, from popular Chardonnays and Merlots to less
familiar, but readily available, Gewürztraminers and Dolcettos. Can't
find a particular wine mentioned? Look for one from the same region in the
same price range.
Throughout the book you'll find helpful information on chilling wine, choosing
a wine store, inviting your friends to a wine-tasting, and how to remember
that wine you really liked. There are practical tips: what 12 basic bottles
you should have on hand at all times, as well as how long to keep that special
bottle of Bordeaux.
Through it all, John and Dorothy make it clear that wine isn't an end in
itself, but just one part of a good life. This book is not just about wine,
but about life, love, romance, and fun. Drink up!
From the Back Cover
Praise from readers of the popular "Tastings"
column:
"When I first started reading [your column] I thought you would teach me
about wine--and you certainly have. But you've also taught me about adventure,
celebration, and joy! What you share of yourselves and your approach to living
is what really makes me look forward to 'Tastings' each and every week. Thank
you so much!"
--Kathleen Avé, Sacramento, California
"When the 'Weekend Journal' first started (and your column entered my
life)--there were no bottles of wine in my house on a regular basis. Now
there's a rotating stash of 10 to 20 bottles (there would be more but you've
encouraged me to find lots of times for celebrating and thus consuming them).
You make it so fun--if there is an opposite of intimidating, you all are
it, and I'm grateful." --Laura Wolff, Ferguson, Missouri.....Just Click

Wine For Dummies: Second Edition
Regular $19.99....Now 15.99....Save 20%
Second Edition: Wine for Dummies, Mary Ewing-Mulligan teams up with hubby and fellow wine educator Ed McCarthy to guide us on an exhaustive, entertaining trip around the enological--that's right, enological--world. Though clearly experts themselves (Ewing-Mulligan is one of a handful of Americans holding the rare title Master of Wine), the authors assure us that even the most basic knowledge will undermine the very notion of wine pretension. It's as simple as this: "This wine is named for a grape variety. This wine is named for a geographical region. When they make this kind of wine, it goes into this kind of bottle." And so on.
By providing the context in which to begin exploring wine, Wine for Dummies can easily become the send-off for a lifelong education. McCarthy and Mulligan deflate many of the wine snob's attitudes; they assure us that most wine sold today is "good wine," and that any further distinctions made about wine are ultimately subjective. The practical, jovial mentoring the authors provide encourages readers to chart their own course toward drinking great wine (although the authors naturally recommend dozens of their own favorites along the way). In later chapters, McCarthy and Mulligan delve into more serious topics such as investing in and cellaring wine. Even these discussions seem appropriate, given that you'll probably find the allure of wine growing as its mystery subsides to the force of this superb introductory text. --Todd Gehman

This book was a labor of love!
According to the critics, it is the BEST introductory wine book
available! Written in an easy-to-read style without the usual wine jargon,
Wine For Dummies has lots of humor, yet lots of depth. The second edtion
is completely updated. The first edition has sold over 300,000 compies in
less than 3 years! We love the fact that it appeals to readers with all different
levels of wine knowledge, whether it be basic, intermediate, or advanced.
There's something for everyone in Wine For Dummies. Most other wine books
available are difficult to read (translation: boring) for many readers. One
of us is a master of wine, both of us are certified wine educators and both
of us love wine. One of us is an ex-English teacher and the other majored
in English, so we made sure this book is well written yet an easy read.
