It is a question we get asked regularly at Wine Storage. Sometimes by email, sometimes during a cellar visit, sometimes from friends over dinner: do I really need a professional wine cellar, or is a good wine fridge enough?
An honest question deserves an honest answer. So let us try.
What a wine fridge can do and what it cannot
A wine fridge is a practical solution. We do not want to dismiss that. For 20 to 50 bottles that you plan to drink within the next year or two, it is perfectly adequate. It maintains a consistent temperature, protects against direct light, and is simple to use.
But it has limits. And those limits become important the moment you start collecting wine more seriously.
Capacity Most wine fridges hold between 20 and 60 bottles. Anyone buying en primeur regularly, or ordering cases from Burgundy or Piedmont, quickly runs out of space. Then comes the second unit. Then the third.
Vibration Almost all wine fridges use compressor cooling. This creates constant micro-vibrations that demonstrably affect wine quality over time. Particularly sensitive: older vintages with sediment, fine Burgundies, mature Champagnes.
Humidity Wine fridges are optimised for short-term storage. Humidity levels are often too low for long-term ageing, which can cause corks to dry out and allow air into the bottle exactly what you are trying to prevent.
Long-term ageing A wine fridge is not a wine cellar. It is designed to keep wines at drinking temperature, not to age a 2010 Barolo optimally for 15 years.
When does professional wine cellar rental make sense?
We are not interested in convincing people who are not ready. But there are clear situations where professional wine storage is the better choice.
You are buying wines you plan to hold for more than two years. Your collection has grown beyond 50 to 100 bottles. Your cellar includes bottles worth more than CHF 50 each. You do not have a suitable home cellar with a consistent temperature below 15 degrees. You want to protect your investment without thinking about it.
If any of these apply to you, it is time to consider an alternative…
